Health and Safety

PSI believes that a meticulous Health and Safety program is central to a successful business and must be part of the culture at all levels of the organization. The nature of our work demands the attention and active participation of every employee. Managers are expected to provide leadership which encourages 100% compliance with safe work practices. Each employee is expected to support our concern for Health and Safety through safe work practices, avoidance of unnecessary risk, and by recognizing unsafe conditions. These efforts, combined with a behavioral approach to workplace safety, are a means of preventing injury to our employees and the general public.

PSI follows it's corporate Health and Safety program. PSI's program is intended to satisfy the requirements of a number of Federal, State, and local regulations, and its customers. Field crews are required to train as Helpers for at least twelve months prior to supervising a project on their own. Having worked on numerous military facilities and large industrial sites, we know how to perform services safely while meeting clients’ stringent protocol. Our goal is to provide our employees with the tools and attitudes necessary to create an ultra-safe work environment in order to ensure the level of professionalism and compliance required by our most demanding clients.

Injury and Illness Prevention Program
PSI’s behavioral-based Health and Safety program is proactive; the intent is to conduct each movement and action in such as way as to prevent accidents and to mitigate the effects of accidents when they do occur. The accident and illness prevention practices are found throughout our organization, and are supplemented by site-specific Health and Safety plans.

Workplace Inspections
Workplace inspections, conducted by our certified HSOs, must occur at project commencement at all jobsites and on a weekly basis for longer-term projects. All worksite inspections are documented for inclusion in the project records. The inspections include housekeeping, tailgate meetings, employee training, employee exposure monitoring, project recordkeeping, accident investigation and recordkeeping, equipment maintenance and inspection, excavation and trenching operations, compliance with SOPs, response to employee safety concerns, and specific hazard communication.

  Hazardous Waste Operations Standard
The Hazardous Waste Operations Standard specifies a number of measures to be taken to protect workers at these sites. Much of our Health and Safety program is aimed at protecting workers in accordance with the guidance in this regulation. The regulation’s requirements include worker training, site-specific Health and Safety plans, medical monitoring, respiratory protection, and exposure monitoring.

Medical Monitoring
The medical monitoring program provides for pre-employment, annual, and termination examinations for all employees potentially exposed to occupational health hazards. The purpose of this program is to verify an employee's physical condition and ability to perform work activities which often include the use of protective equipment.

The program also serves as an employee benefit which provides preventive medical care in helping detect early signs or symptoms of illness which may or may not be related to the work environment. Participation in the medical program is deemed a condition of employment; all employees are required to sign the medical monitoring acknowledgement form.

Training
PSI personnel who may be exposed to occupational health hazards during field work receive training which complies with OSHA regulation. This training includes the 40-hour basic course, 8-hour supervisory course, and an 8-hour annual update course. Project-specific training is conducted to familiarize employees and subcontractors with the hazards that are likely to be encountered during work activities at a particular jobsite. All field employees are trained in behavioral-based safety and encouraged to report near misses as they occur in the field.

OSHA 300 Forms
An OSHA 300 Log of Occupational Injuries is maintained by PSI’s local HSO, as well as for the entire corporation by the Corporate HSO. This log is kept current within six days of an accident. Injuries or illness on transient worksites are included on the corporate log.
